The Hague Files: 170 Cases, 62 Defendants, and 5 Charges of Genocide
Thus far, 170 cases have been heard by the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Of them, just five have included charges of genocide – the accusation leveled against Israel by South Africa in a case that will start this week. Israel now finds itself in the same basket as Russia, Myanmar, Bosnia, and Serbia – all of which have faced similar accusations. The average length of a genocide case being heard at the ICJ is 15 years, compared to an average of four years for other cases heard in The Hague. Shomrim presents a guide to the confrontations at the International Court of Justice, showing every country that has been charged and the country of origin of all the judges.
